בכל רגע נתון ישנם מאות אלפי כלבים וחתולים שנמצאים בבתי מחסה. אנו מקווים שכולם בסופו של דבר ימצאו בתים, אבל בינתיים הם כולם זקוקים לחברה טובה.

בתי מחסה יכולים להיות סביבה מלחיצה עבור בעלי חיים, אבל בעזרת פעולה פשוטה של בילוי זמן איתם – על ידי דיבור, קריאה או משחק – זה יכול להרגיע איתם, ולעזור להם להתרגל לבני אדם ובסופו של דבר לגרום להם להיות מועמדים מתאימים לאימוץ.

ועכשיו ילד מעורר השראה הפך זאת למשימה שלו – לקרוא לכלבים כמה שהוא רק יכול.

#thoughts … A #volunteer is someone who freely offers to undertake a task. In this case it is #reading to #shelter #dogs and #animals. WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS DO? Keep in mind, alot of these pets were either #abandoned #abused or just #lost and they are finding it hard everyday to wiggle their way back into a #positive environment filled with all the #love and #attention they could ever hope for. The simple act of having a child #read to a shelter animal will have the following effects: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ – it creates a postive experience for them with someone that genuinely cares which may lead to a rebuilding of their trust in #humans -it provides them with a sense of #companionship and #comfort and the possible side effect of this is a reduction in #stress and #anxiety -this is all built on a very unique #bonding experience that will hopefully #socialize them and allow them to find their #furever homes Featured here is my boy, Romeo, currently in foster but still adoptable id#68984 @nycacc #boroughbreds #nycacc #givingtuesdaykids ❤️

אוון ביסינאות הוא ילד בן 10 מניו יורק. לפני כמה חודשים הוא ראה הזדמנות להתנדב בבתי מחסה ברחבי ניו יורק במסגרת תכנית בשם Books for Boroughbreds, בה מתנדבים צעירים קוראים ספרים לבעלי חיים.

אוון קפץ על ההזדמנות: "תמיד רציתי לעבוד עם כלבים והתרגשתי כששמעתי שאני יכול להקריא להם".

בזמן שרוב הילדים בגילו משחקים משחקי וידאו, הוא מבלה את זמנו הפנוי עם ספר, קורא בקול לכלבים בודדים בכלביות.

When my mom first told me back in August that I was going to be reading to shelter animals @nycacc I was excited because I was going to be working with dogs and this has been something that I've been wanting to do. I did not know what to expect from my experience and I am still learning. Romeo(68984) was the first dog I read to and he was an absolute pleasure. I remember being drawn to him because he was sitting quietly in the back of his cage and I assumed he was scared. As I read to him his ears just perked up and he came to the front to listen. I couldn't believe how cute and sweet he was and at that point I realized how important my job was to make these dogs feel more comfortable when they spend most of their time in uncertainty. As I visited the shelter week after week I learned to take my time and try to understand what they were going through. I learned that I am not going to get through to every dog, but it's not a fail. I think it's more important to know that I gave them my time and I was their friend for the day. As I got to know some of these animals and their stories I found that it is hard to hear… and see the things that they've been through. I wanted them to know that I was there to help them conquer their past fears and traumas and that someone is on their side even if it was just to soothe them for a brief moment. It was a moment they didn't have to worry or be nervous and that means everything to them. This season is a time of year that we are especially filled with light and joy, but I am realizing how many animals don't get to be a part of a loving family and how long some of them have been sitting alone in their kennels without someone to love them. Life is precious and time is something we cannot get back – if you can give your time to an animal in need this season (volunteer/foster…even better, Adopt), you would be amazed at how instantly you impact their world. אוון כתב שהוא ראה את התקופות הקשות שכלבים עוברים, ויודע שלא תמיד הוא יצליח לעשות שינוי עם כל כלב. הוא גם ראה שממיתים הרבה מהכלבים שהוא הקריא להם.

אך העבודה יכולה להיות גם מאוד מתגמלת, והוא ראה מקרוב את ההשפעה שיש לטוב הלב שלו על הכלבים.

"החוויה המתגמלת ביותר היא כאשר אני מנסה לעזור באופן ספציפי לכלב בסיכון גבוה ואני יכול לראות באופן מיידי את ההשפעה ואיך הוא מגיב לזה שאני מקריא לו", אמר אוון.

"הוא מתחיל להיות יותר רגוע ואפילו נרדם…זה משמח אותי בגלל שיכולתי לראות לפני זה שהם היו לחוצים ומפחדים".

Sam has been with the shelter a number of times and would be more than appreciative of a stable home all his own, one without other pups, with lots of love, and the possibility of a bedtime story every night. As for Evan, by now you surely know of the incredible work he’s doing providing special enrichment to the @nycacc animals. I was nothing short of star struck in meeting him yesterday, and will be profiling this special person, his very special mother, and their work more in the weeks to come. Meet Monte (84408) and Riley (84080) – these two are kennel neighbors at the shelter @nycacc . They are attentive and followed me to whichever side I was on just to hear the story. Monte is said to have some exciting puppy energy, but you can hear in his whines that he just wants your love and some attention. Monte is currently New Hope only, but he has so much potential if just given the right energy, care and pawsitive experiences. Riley is all wrinkles! She is playful and yet still quaint and lady-like.
